Unit 9 Blog

Unit 9 Final Project
The reason that health and wellness professionals need to develop physical, psychological, and spiritual aspects is because they need to show their clients the importance of all three aspects.  It is important that they teach their clients by being a role model.  They have to life and teach by living a life that is not imbalance from the following concepts.  So a professional needs to live their life by living healthy life through exercise, eating habits, and etc.  They also have to train the mind in order to change their living habits.  If they are able to train the mind then they can change their lifestyle and reduce their stress, anxiety, and negative thoughts in the process.  Finally, they need to have spiritual wellness because believing in a higher power will allow any individual to have a sense of relieve and gives them a sense of calmness and relaxation.  When these professionals are able to master these three concepts then they will be able to pass their learning and information on to their clients giving them the ability to reach a healthier lifestyle.  The area that I need to continue to improve on is having a wellness in the psychological area.  This is the area that I still need the most improvement on and will have the most beneficial achievement when I have reached the goal that I have sent.
When it comes to assessing my health in three domains it varies from category to category.  I definitely believe that I have grown in each domain but I always believe that there is room to grow and with determination I will be able to achieve my goals in each level towards an overall wellness.  I would rate my physical health 6 out of 10.  I have a goal in mind and would love to accomplish it with in the next couple of months.  I have a routine workout and I eat the correct foods most of the time.  The reason that I do not give myself a higher rating would be because I tend forgot to workout and sometimes I go back to eating unhealthy foods.  When it comes to spiritual well being I would rate myself 7 out of 10.  I definitely believe in a higher power and I try to use pray on an everyday basis.  I believe that spirituality gives me a sense of relaxation and because of this faith I do not put extreme amounts of pressure on myself.  My psychological well being would have to be rated as 6 out of 10.  I believe that this is the area that I need the most work in and I am determine to achieve this part of wellness through the skills and exercises that I learned throughout the term.  The reason that I rate this so low is because I tend to keep things inside instead of talking about emotions and feelings with others.  I also struggle sometimes on mediation and other exercises because of the distractions that I sometimes get when participating in these exercises.  I believe if I continue to work on my weaknesses I will eventually make these areas stronger and will become a healthier person.
I believe the goals that I have set can help me accomplish my overall wellness.  The goal that I have set for myself when it comes to physical health is being able to stick with an exercise routine and implement it on an everyday basis.  I also want to be able to cut out as much junk food out of my diet that way I have took the craving from these foods and it allows me to eat healthier foods for my body.  My goal for psychological health is being able to continue to improve in mediation.  I want to be able to mediate without any distractions and complete the mediation in a calm and relaxing way.  I also want to be able to experience different types of mediation throughout my life in order to have a variety of mediations.  My goal for spiritual health is being able to get closer to God and put more faith in his hand.  I want to be able to use prayer more and have that time that I can speak to the Lord through thoughts and prayers.  All these goals will help me get closer to my achievements and set up a guideline for me throughout this process.
I have the perfect exercises in order to become a better person because of these strategies that I will implement into my everyday life.  I believe that the strategies that I must implement are commitment and dedication.  I need to have the determination that I know I can achieve all my goals through these exercises and strategies.  I believe that I can start by caring a journal and righting down everything that I experience from the exercises.  I also believe that I can set alarms to remind me when I need to complete these exercises and I definitely believe that having a buddy system can help me when it comes to accomplishing my goals.  The exercises that I can implement in my exercise routine include power yoga.  This keeps my workout different and allows for different muscles in my body to be exercised.  This exercise allows not allow works the body but allows relieves stress and prepares muscles for more vigorous activity throughout the day.  The next exercises that can help with my goal include push-ups.  This exercise is important because it is simple to do and I do not have to go to a gym in order to complete it.  I also believe that I can use a daily planner in order to watch what I eat.  I can record everything that I eat then cut out anything that does not need to be in my daily diet (Morning Exercise, 2011).  The exercise that I would use for psychological health would be an exercise dealing with neural building and strengthening exercises.  When doing these exercises, I would use my opposite hand when brushing my teeth, dial the phone, and using the television remote.  The importance of these exercises is being able to train the mind to know not to rely on a specific body function and being equal when it comes to body functions.  The next exercise that I will implement would be neurobic exercises.  In these exercises I would combine two senses at the same time, such as smelling a flower and listen to music or listening to rain and taping my fingers.  This would train the mind to multitask without becoming overwhelmed with stress and anxiety (The Human Brain, 2004).  The exercises that I would include when it comes to spiritual health include first an exercise called, “Centering Prayer.”  This exercise allows me become clam and quiet and just being in the presence of God.  This exercise shows me that analyzing, judging, and etc. are not important and being with God helps me understand my surroundings and become closer to the higher power (Centering Prayer, 2007).  My next spiritual exercise is called, “Experience Presence of God” and this allows me put myself in a quiet place and mediate of verse in the scripture of the Bible.  I will repeat this verse over and over and after this is over I can pray and speak to God about the experience that I have had from the exercise.  I will implement all these exercises and strategies by beginning a schedule for myself.  I will time out each exercise on a daily basis and this will help me organize each strategy without becoming stressed and will help me accomplish my goals through these exercises (Experience Presence of God, 2007).
The commitment process of change maybe the most important decision because it allows for me to recognize that I need to me a change in order to become a healthier person.  The first one that I will do in order to track my progress in the next six months include having a journal or continue to post on my blog.  This will allow me to show myself through the experiences that I have had for the day whether it be a positive or negative thought or emotion because of the exercises that I have completed.  I believe that this blog will allow me to look at my experiences through the six months and see what I have improved on or still need maybe need to improve in.  I believe that I need to obtain a schedule in order to maintain my practices in health and wellness.  With the use of an alarm clock and schedule I can continue to do my exercises in order to obtain my goals of becomes an overall healthy person.  Some of the other strategies that I will implement into my daily life will be keeping positive thoughts throughout my process.  This will help me when having negative thoughts and emotions because I can use my positive thoughts to keep out the distractions that I may have during certain times during my life.  I also believe that if I have a buddy system I will be able to accomplish the goals at hand.  I think that having an individual their encouraging me and helping with my exercises, this will keep my spirits high and my achievements in reach.  All the steps that I have taking will allow me to have a better life and will have a much enjoyable and relaxed experience when I accomplish my goals to becoming an overall healthy person.

  3. Hi Charles,

Great job on your post this week! I enjoyed reading your personal health plan, which I found to be beneficial and appropriate. I appreciate the new ideas you shared for training the mind; such as engaging in everyday activities with the opposite hand and neurobic exercises to help with multitasking without feeling overwhelmed or anxious. This technique appears to be similar to the concept of mindfulness, where one learns to stay in the present without being consumed by a multitude of things going on around them.

Likewise, the techniques on Centering Prayer and Experience Presence of God seem to be beneficial activities for fostering spiritual growth and development. The latter activity almost works like devotional reading where you take a daily devotion, read it through a few times, meditate on it, then ask God to show how you can apply the message in your life.

A couple of things I observed and wanted to share with you; writing down your exercise routines and daily meals is a great way to monitor your progress and make sure you are eating healthy foods throughout the days. I also use an online site to help me keep track of my nutrient and fitness goals, meals, workouts, etc. It has been a blessing for me as it helps me to monitor my meals and fitness workouts by meeting goals and challenges. It does require that you input totals daily lest you forget; however, I have discovered that writing down my workout challenges and daily meals in a journal helps me to get around this obstacle. As far as junk food goes, don’t buy it so you won’t be tempted. If you must, buy once a week (small serving)to use as a reward when you have burned extra calories or have accomplished a goal. Don’t be too hard on yourself; indulge if you must, but work harder the next day :)

By the way, great idea for using the blog for keeping track of goals and progression. The buddy system is also a great way for moral support and motivation. I use a workout journal which has helped me tremendously. I make note of workout challenges (I usually find them online) and write them down to do as part of my daily routine, which I do first to jump start my mornings. My first love is running, but when it’s too cold to venture outdoors, I commit to circuit training or intervals with resistance workouts (push-ups, burpees, pull-ups, hanging leg raises, squats, lunges, crunches, etc.) and skipping with a jump rope for 20 minutes with various sets and skipping variations (regular, one-leg, low jack, scissor, side-to-side, high knees). It gets the heart rate up; at least, at my age :)

Thanks again for sharing your health journey. I enjoyed reading your weekly posts that have provided support and thoughtful tips. That said, I believe this is when visualization will help as you see yourself engaging in your goals and achieving them. You applied yourself to create a wonderful blog and be a source of inspiration and motivation to others. I believe that you have the same drive and determination to help you achieve your health and wellness goals.

    Good luck and God bless!

  4. Dear Charles:

After reviewing your final assessment on all the aspects of your life areas of mental, physical and spiritual needs. You have done a great job on voicing how you are working on your life through different activities. I agree and understand how difficult it can be to stick to accomplishing all these tasks to achieve your goals. It can be very overwhelming and just suggest to take one day at a time and one aspect at a time, too. We cannot always be perfect,so we should try to stay on track with our exercise and set to workout everyday, but understand that if we reach 3 to 5 times a week of routine exercise, that will be ok. Make sure to add physical activity each day, so we move our minds andbodies.

Praying is vital each day as well. That should be first because I feel without it, we are unstable and a bit lost. Nothing can be
accomplished without that peace that prayer brings us.

Also it is extremely hard not to be tempted each day with unhealthy food choices, so try to take as many whites and refined sugars out of your diet and add a lot of water. This should help with weight loss and overall health and wellness.

Keep up the great work and I am going to work on incorporating a d follow a lot of what you are doing in all areas of your life, as well.

Good luck and look forward to working with uou again in the future.

    Andrea
